The Feeling of Home: Suzi
Filmed September 2020, Northumberland
As a family we love to spend time up on the Northumberland coast. It’s something I used to do nearly every year as a child, and I still adore that heady mix of salt on skin, windswept hair, and the sound of the sea.
In-between lockdowns a couple of years ago we managed to get away there with my parents, and whilst they looked after O, building a multitude of sandcastles to keep her occupied, I filmed with Suze.
I used an old Super 8 camera, which is where much of my love of the moving image comes from, I challenged myself to film this in sequence, so there is no editing here - apart form inserting the two clips you see of a younger Suze. Knowing there is only a limited time with the Super 8 cartridge, I was timing each shot. I'd recorded Suzi's voiceover before we left, so I knew which order things came in, and I had planned the shots around this, but it was still very much a challenge!
