AT THE KITCHEN TABLE.

I’ve been creating a body of work, and I wondered if you'd like to be a part of it?
Since doing family shoots, I’ve noticed how many photos I take of families around their kitchen table. It can be SO central to life. These tables are where we eat together, talk together, take time to be alone. Laugh, play and plan. It felt like it was the right time to start talking about it, and to ask you for your stories of life around your kitchen table. I’d love to hear from you if you’d like to be involved (Yorkshire area for now). What do you use your table for? Is it a place you sit and watch the world go by? Have your tea, work, read? Plan big adventures? Write letters to friends, play table tennis, look at your family photographs? Have arm wrestles, play board games, craft, chat? In time, it may be an exhibition, or part of our book. If you’re in the Yorkshire area, would you like to be a part of the project? And please do feel free to share this post with anyone you think may be interested!
Tea For Two - Mum.

When we went up to see Mum and Dad last week, I hadn’t actually planned for Mum to be my tea for twoer. But when she put the kettle on our arrival, I went back into the hall to get my camera out of my bag.
My Mum and Dad are creatures of habit. For as long as I can remember, Dad goes to make Mum her first cup of the day in a proper cup and saucer, and she drinks it in bed. I can recall that feeling of knowing I had to get up for school when I heard the sound, through my bedroom wall, of the cup rattling as she placed it back in the saucer. She likes it strong and will often leave the tea bag in for 5 minutes. The milk is always skimmed, the tea bags always Tesco’s own. We have both been known to take our own tea bags to each other’s houses as I prefer PG. We sat down and chatted, mostly about Olive (who was looking on quizzically from the sofa). And then Mum got the photos out and we took a trip down memory lane. Then the cup rattled in the saucer and I knew she was itching for another hug with Olive. It was a short, but sweet tea for two. It was good to have those few minutes just for us. If you’d like to see more from Mum’s tea for 2, I’ve put them in our Stories 🧡☕️. #storiesoftheeveryday_frames
I remember the day a couple of years ago, I woke up and realised the business was causing more angst than joy. I’d fallen out of love. Not with the taking photographs side of it, but the stresses of running a small business were keeping me awake at night. I felt I’d let it down, that I’d ignored some niggles I’d had. I was trying to do too much, and trying to be too much to too many people. Something had to give.

I’ve just written a blog post about this feeling, and some of the things I did to fall back in love👆. I’ve talked about it before on our blog, about the business being our first baby before Olive. I don’t want it to sound overly dramatic, but it can really feel like that as a small business owner can’t it?
We’ve had an idea brewing for a while, and in the next couple of weeks, we’re going to launch a new retreat - The Business Of Photography. This is for you if you’re on the cusp, or thinking about setting up your portrait photography business. Or maybe you’ve been running your business for a while, but feel you need to give it some of your attention, a warm hug, so you can fall back in love. How to work with your ideal clients, finding clarity in where you are, where you’d like to be, and how to get there. The 3 Ps - Portfolio, Pricing, Products.
Does this sound like something you’d be interested in? We’ll be posting details over the next couple of weeks. We’d love to hear your thoughts. Now then, let’s get some Barry White on and eat copious amounts of choc! 🧡

In the past, our newsletter has been a bit sporadic, a space where we shared recent shoots and seasonal offers. But we wanted it to be so much more than this. We wanted to start conversations, sharing work from others that we’ve been inspired by, tips for your photography, and also the occasional bit of news on shoots and offers on our family sessions. We’re busy getting this month’s letter ready for mailing out this weekend. Along with sharing tips for photographing your family this spring, we’ll have our next photography surgery date. We have half a day each month dedicated to answering any questions you have about photography. Maybe it’s about getting more out of your camera, using natural light, or about getting to grips with exposure. These take the form of a Skype chat. There’s no charge for this. People have been generous with their time towards us, so we wanted to give something back. So far we’ve helped people with white balance, understanding different lenses and focal lengths, getting to grips with ISO and help with setting up a portrait photography business. If you’d like to join the list, we’ve put a link in our bio 👆. Some of our favourite newsletters are from @caughtbytheriver @artifactuprising and @daniellelaporte. We’ll take time for a cup of tea and a biccie to read them. Do you have newsletters that ping into your inbox that you put the kettle on for?

Easy like Sunday Morning - Ethel and Mabel style!
Fuelled by tea and crumpets, Me and Suzi started the first chapters of our book this week. Whilst writing, we’ve been having conversations about the importance of taking the time to document family life, and what this means to us now we are three. Being there to take photos of a chapter in a family’s life will always be a privilege, but documenting these lives over a few years, well that makes my heart sing. I’m bottling that and calling it the Ethel and Mabel effect. I wanted to share some photos with you of this amazing pair, they have such a sense of old world charm and style. On our blog today, link up in the bio 👆, I’m sharing photos I’ve taken of them over the last few years, and the very first family film I made just after Mabel’s arrival 🧡. I think Ethel was my first ever Tea For Two, I’ll have to ask her if she’s up for another cuppa with me ☕️. My style and edit choices might have changed a bit, but the sentiment remains the same. Head up to the blog if you’d like to see Ethel and Mabel’s story in mornings so far. And whatever you’re doing, we hope you’re having an easy Sunday morn. x

Tea For Two - Hannah.

You might have seen last week that I’ve started a project I’m calling Tea For Two. I’m having a catch up with a friend every week over a brew, and taking a few photos. Seven years ago, this smiley one asked me to join her on a walk. On that first stomp with @hannahnunnstudio, it felt like I was catching up with an old friend. We talked about everything from business to family. It was the start of many a Friday morning walk, and the start of a cherished friendship. Over these years, we’ve discovered new paths and walks around our Hebden Bridge, but we keep coming back to one. It starts high above the valley amongst the heather. The path then takes us along passed the silver birch trees and into the beech wood. Here we’ve found a step where we sit and drink our tea. Here we’ve laughed and cried. We’ve seen our families blossom and our businesses grow. We stepped out into a winter wonderland last week and our footsteps were the first on our path down to the step. After we poured the tea we chatted about our businesses, yoga and cats 😊. Hannah always takes photos of the nature around us on these walks and I always wonder if they’ll make it into her next design. The light was really quite lovely that morning as we watched it dance through the branches. It was a good day to be out with a friend. There’s more from Hannah’s tea for two in our stories today if you’d like to see the step! Brew - Tea. Milk, No Sugar. .

Following on from our post the other day, we’re chatting about FRAMES on the blog tonight. We’ve put a link in our bio 👆. Those frames within frames that create depth, tell a story, let you in to another world. Thanks to our friend Dean who braved the cold the other night so I could get a few shots framing him through the windscreen. We took a light panel out too as I wasn’t sure if just the headlights would be sufficient. You can probably make out the light source as it hits Dean’s left cheek. We caused a bit of a stir with a few folk curious as to what we were up to! I’m having fun experimenting with the theme. If you want to have a go, we hope the blog helps with a few ideas. And don’t forget to tag your photos with #storiesoftheeveryday_frames and we’ll do a round up at the end of Feb. Happy framing! 🖼 .
